MATCH WITH M.C.C.
NEW ZEALAND BATTING. Comment on the Play. press Association —Copyright. Wellington. March 26 The English cricket team's first innings in rtie mlatch against New Zealand closed for 427 just before lunch yesterday, and in reply New Zealand trad made 201 for six wickets when strftnps were drawn last evening. The match Will be continued to-morrow, Saturday.
The wicket was faster than yesterday, and the New Zealanders., who started their innings at 12.55 p.m„ found difficulty in playing Alien’s fast leliveries. At one stage' Allen had three wickets for nine runs and finished up with three for 30. This fine howling performance, after his. 88 'With rhe bat, demonstrated what a fine all round player the English captain is. Things did not look Very good for New Zealand when three wickets were down t’or 40 runs, but the' caprain, Page, and th;, vice-captain, Vivian, then stayed together and put on 146 for the; fourth wicket. Both played the English bowlers with confidence and scored freely from Allen, Voce. Hammand and Verity.
Page reached 50 in 124 minutes and Vivian ran to 88 in 149 minutes, and their displays were up to anything the Englishmen had given. Allen and Voce bowled particularly well, for England. Allen, though not bowling at. his 'top pace, worked up a. good turn of speed. He v,'as a yard faster than Cowie. Voce was dangerous through the 15.2 overs he bowled. His ability to make the ball lift had all the batsmen, with the exception of Vivian and Page, in. trouble, and he at last dismissed both thfase batsmen, his tally being three lor 40. Hammond bowled very steadily in sending town 13 overs for. 22 runs. .Worthington, Sims and Verity did not trouble the New Zealand batsmen. Except for free hitting by Allen, the New' Zealand bowlers kept a good length and gave- little away during the morning’s play. Cowie, Roberts, Vivilan and Page secured two wickets rpiece and Dunning and Weir one each. Detailed scores- are:
