It is estimated that 25,000 men are idle throughout the nation as the result of labou# disputes in more than 40 industrial and business firms. The Santa Monica police chief, Mr Read, has issued an ultimatum to strikers at the Douglas plant demanding that they vacate the premises immediately, otherwise he threatened to use force. Two Elgin, Illinois, watch case plants have closed owing to the strike of 600 workers. Boston strikers at 27 shoe plants have won their demand for a 15 per cent, v'age increase.
