Mr Justice Smith in the Supreme Court to-day fined Paul Nodwell, a single man aged 57, £5T' and ordered that such sum be paid w’thiii two days or that he be detained in prison for a period not exceeding tv'o years. 'Nodwell had been found guilty of arson. His Honour said the prisoner was guilty of a cold, calculated, selfish crime. He hoped to gain a new house and had endangered the lives of his neighbours. Apparently grasp for money had been his aim in life, and the court proposed to make him f«el the effect of his crime through his purse and to show that arson was not a crime to be treated ligh.ly.
