NO POWER AT ALL.

MOTOR REGULATIONS.

Effect On Stratford’s Traffic

Inspector

“Under the new traffic regulations of 1936, | have no powftr ajti all as a traffic inspector, as ths Government intends taking over the control of all towns of 6,000 population or under,.? wrote Mr A. E. Sayers, borough inspector, to the Council last night.

“The Council,” continued Mr Sayers, “will have to get.the written approval of the Minister for the control of traffic in the terms of these regulations within the Borough of Stratford, and then I would only be able to control in the case of a road within a borough or town district, other than a main highway by the Borough or Town Board, which means the back “streets. At present I have no power to prosecute or to stop anyone for breaches of the regulations.” Mr Sayers quoted a press report in which the Minister of Transport (Hon. R. Semple) said his proposal was for the Transport Department to take over traffic in all> towns of 6,000 inhabitants and under the fees received and fines imposed being devoted to employing inspectors, not “pimps,” whose duty it would be to educate motorists, as safety on the road depended not on terrorising drivers, but on training them. Mr Sayers 1 comment on the foregoing Was as follows:—“I do not know anything about 'pimp.’ but I am pleased to see the Government is taking up the Stratford Borough Council’s policy of educating motorists, which has been carried out here during the past ten years.”

The Council is to make application to the Minister of Transport for authority for Mr Sayers to carry on as traffic inspector.
