FOURTH MATCH. ENGLAND OUT. Fifth Test At Melbourne Will Decide. Press Association—Copyright. Adelaide, Feb. 4. . Australia defeated England by 148 runs in the fourth test and the, fifth test at Melbourne on February 26 will be reqiured to decite the fate of th® ashes. Australia made 288 and 433, a total of 721, and fcnglanu 330 and 243, a total of 573. England’s hqpes of snatching a victory faded rapidly by a spell of inspiring bowling by Fleetwood-Smith. England pinned its faith to Hammond and Leyland, who resumed this morning in perfect weather. Tliero was. a dramatic moment when Hammond played forward to a “wrong-un” from Fleetwood-Smith, missed with his bat and the hall took the off stump. The crowd made enough noise for three times its num,er as the English batsman walked away from the wicket. Hammond was, Australia’s' public enemy No. 1 and fils' dismissal, was like suu shining. through a cloudbank to the crowd.

E-rigland was facing an almost Impossible. task at lunch with six down for 221 and still needed 170 runs to win. A batting collapse came immediately, four wickets falling for an insignificant addition. England made a game fight in the second innings but could not cope with fhe dexterity of the spin bowlers . except for the new ball period after lunch. Fleetwood-Smith and O’Reilly bowled practically unchanged throughout the day’s session. The innings lasted 294 minutes. The scores are:
