Inspection Of Troops By Governor. Suva, January 25. Heavy raifip* early on Saturday afternoon soaked officers and men of the Fiji Defence Forces as they stood at arms, ready for an inspection by the Governor, Sir Arthur Richards, but Jupiter I’luvius was kind, and just as his Excellency arrived the clouds rolled away and the sun shone out upon a gay tcene. After the inspection his Excellency presented efllcieilcy medals to the acting Commandant, Major C. B. Joske, and to Captain A. D. Ackland, for 20 years 1 ’ commissioned service. Then followed the presentation of medals to N.C.O.’s and men with 12 years’ service, with a clasp for the completion of 20 years’ service. The last person to receive a medal was Maraia Sau, widow of the late Sergeant Rupeni, who was employed for many years by the Bank of New Zealand. Six constables received the Colonial Police Long Service Medal. Having taken the salute in a general march past, his Excellency told the men that, in serving they were not only serving their King and country but also themselves, for by cultivating the outward habit of discipline they would learn mental discipline, or the haibit of controlling themselves. That was a habit that would make them give the best that was in them. It is interesting to note that Major Joske now possesses no fewer than nine decorations', namely, the Insignia of the 0.8. E., the Military Cross-, the Efiicieiicy Decoration, the 1914-15 Star, the British General Service Medal, the Victory Medal, the Silver Jubilee Medal, Insignia of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour (France), anti the Insignia of the Older of st, Olaf (Norway).
