WIN FOR HAWERA.
MATCH AT STRATFORD Fine Sportsmanship Shown By Home Side. Playing at Victoria Park on Saturday the Stratford senior cricket team was defeated by Hawera who scored 162 for eight wickets to 158. The visitors were late in arriving and it was agreed that the home side should have the option of continuing after 7 p.m. When the time arrived Hawera was at the wickets and the Stratford captain generously allowed the extra time, although the game was at a critical stage and Hawera went on to win by four runs before stumps were drawn. Stratford won the toss and Hall opened with M. Gray. It was the latter’s first match since the holidays and spectators were interested m the reappearance of Stratford’s crack batsman. Hall, however, did not display his real form and he was unlucky in being caught out when his score stood at 14. He snicked a ball and it was smartly taken by the wicket-keeper, Hawke. At the fall of the wicket the partnership had produced 24 runs. Gray continued on to bat in nice style and scored the first six of the match after being at the wickets for 50 minutes. He was batting confidently when he was bowled by Penny. His score of 29 included five boundaries. Lay’s score ol 17 was comprised of six singles, a four, and a six. Some nice shots were played by Hunter who made 15 off the over, including three fours. He added a single before he was bowled by Shaw. After making a two and a four Bonner was clean bowled by Geary. Beere batted with confidence until he was caught by Newman. McKenzie and Adlam reached double figures but the remainder of the wickets went cheaply. Hawke, Hawera’s top scorer, batted cautiously and he had the measure of the bowling until he was caught by Hall. Betts’ score of 31 included five fours.
