; INFANTILE PARALYSIS. i BALCLUTHA DEATH I No Fresh Cases Admitted At Dunedin. Press Association—Copyright. Dunedin, Last Night. The first fatal case of infantile paralysis in South Otago was recorded to-day, the patient being a man aged 27 who was admitted to the Balclutha hospital on January 9. The patient was in a serious condition when admitted but a slight improvement took place for some time before the disease assumed fatal severity. This is the eighth death since the commencemen-t of the epidemic. No fresh oases were admitted to the Dunedin hospital to-day. A suspected case of infantile paralysis, a seaman, aged 27 years, on the Pensilva, which arrived from Port Chalmers, yesterday was admitted to the Westport Hospital tonight. Also admitted were two seamen off the same vessel as contacts for observation. A suspected case of infantile paralysis admitted to the Rotorua hospital on Friday morning has been identified as a positive case of paralysis, with complications caused by kidney trouble The patient, who is a young woman, 19 years of age, was married a month ago. This is the only reported or suspected case in the district and immediate strict ■ restrictions have foeeln imposed on all contacts. One positive case of paralysis and onei suspected case were admitted to the Wellington hospital, both from I the city. The positive case is a girl lof seven, the spine being infected, i but there is no paralysis. The sus- , pected case is a girl of three. The test has not proved positive. There has been only one positive case at Wellington previousy, a child who came from Dunedin. A positive mild case of paralysis, a woman aged 46 years, from Staveley, was admitted to the Ashburton hospital during the week-end, making the third case in the Ashburton county.
