WOOL SALES.

London Prices Advance Yesterday. London, January 12. > The first series of wool sales for 1937 opened with an offering of 8791 bales, of which 1837 bales were New Zealand wool. There were 8064 bales sold. Buying was active and prices . advanced by 7J to 10 per cent, in merinos, 15 per cent, in fine crossbreds, and 10 to 15 per cent, in medium crossbreds. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company report the sale as follows:—“There was a good attendance, competition by Home and French buyers being keen. The opening catalogues were fairly representative. As compared with last sale’s closing rates, prices are lid per lb higher for greasy merino, lid to 2d per lb higher for medium and coarse greasy crossbred, 2d to 2J per lb higher for fine crossbred, and crossbred slipe; 2Jd to 3d per lb higher for scoured merino, and 3d per lb higher for scoured crosbrsed." The Bank of New South Wales received a cabled report as follows:-—: Good and general competition; meri-; nos 71 per cent, to 10 per cent., cross-1 breds 10 per cent, to 15 per cent, dearer than last sale’s close. Fine halfbred. 56/58, 1/7; haltbred. 50/56, 1/6; three-quarterbred, 48/50, 1/4; fine crossbred. 46/58, 1/3J; medium. 44/46, 1/3; crossbred. 40/44, 1/3. No merino wool offered opening day. The Bank of Australasia reports a cable as follows:—Market strong. Merinos 5 to 10 per cent, dearer. Greasy crossbred 10 to 15 per cent, dearer. Scoured crossbreds 15 to 20 per cent dearer. Sliped crossbreds 15 per cent, dearer, compared with closing rales of last series.
