EDITORIAL PROTEST.
> AUSTRALIAN TARIFF Lancashire Resents Agreement With Japan. London, Jan .13. The Lanchshire Chamber of Commerce, says the Manchester Guardian in an editorial article, has been stirred to protest by resentment of Australia’s action in reducing the tariff on Japanese cotton and rayon goods, thereby reducing the concessions made to Lancashire six months -• 1 ••• •• “The Australian Government can be criticised for misleading the British exporter and the British Government last May,” says the paper. “It pretended to be acting in the interests of Imperial solidarity and used the widened preference fcr Lancashire as a means of getting better terms for Australian agricultural exports to Britain. “The fault lies with the British Government, which either was hoodwinked or deliberately yielded to Australia on the meat question without securing adequate guarantees for British exports. There is no evidence that the British Governmoht, although acquainted with the course of the Australian Japanese negotiations. ever lifted a finger to safeguard Lancashires’ position.”
