Changing sheds plan upsets Kinloch residents

A petition signed by 73 ratepayers and residents of Kinloch protesting at the proposed siting of changing sheds on the Kinloch Esplanade has been received by the Taupo County Council. The council- considered a proposal last March to construct changing facilities on the esplanade, opposite the end oi' Marina Terrace, and sought eomment from the Kinloch Ratepayers' and Recreational Association before making a deeision. Association memoers dcferred comment until their next general meeting. and the petition came forward

in the meantime. It said the proposed site for the changing sheds would detract from the amenities of the neighbourhood and there were alternative sites available. Councillors decided on Tuesday to advise petitioners that the council did not propose to -install the sheds in the current financial year. * * * County staff houscs are being given ceiling insulation and their occupants have remarked on the noticeable difference, said the health and building inspeetor, Mr W. E. Watters. I he New Zealand Elec-

tricity Department, in conjunctiOn.with other authorities, had carried out a survey which proved conclusively that ceiling insulation reduced energy consumption by as much as 25 to 30 per cent, he said. The year-long survey involved 2000 homes in each of which electricity eonsumption was noted carefully before and after insulation was installed. * * * In his monthly report, Mr Watters said a large number of dwellings in Turangi had been visited in reeent months on infectious disease investigations, Iitter complaints and complaints from neighbours.

" The standard of housekeeping and maintenance of grounds leaves much to be desired on a few of these premises, and this leads to the further spread of disease and social disharmony," he said. "Cleansing orders have not been served on these premises in the past because, once complied with, there would have been no follow-up to ensure that conditions did not revert to their former state. "Discussions have been held with the public health nurse, who is agreeable to participate in the formation ot a social welfare committee with the aim of assisting these people vvith their problenis."
