Power cuts unlikely — but caution urged
No more total power cuts are expected in the Taupo area if the present situation continues — but consumers are still being asked to make voluntary savings. The chairman of the electricity committee, Mr G. Marlow, told a meeting of the Taupo Borough Council this week that the slight relaxation of power restrictions announced by the NZED last Friday would improve the situation for the Taupo MED. "Power consumption is now to be kept to 97 per cent of a basic allocation — previously 95 per cent — and this restraint has
now to be achieved over three week periods," he said. Restraints on water heating and storage heating are to be eased progressively "as the situation permits." Street lighting hours returned to normal on Monday and underverandah lighting hours have been extended until midnight. "The power crisis is not over but the end of this year's difficulties would seem to be just around the corner," said Mr Marlow. "Continued co-operation and voluntary savings by individuals will let us reduce the imposed inconvenience of hot water and storage heating restrictions."
