Rate rise "unpalatable
necessity"
The Mayor, Mr C. S. Currie, has described the rise in Taupo's rates this year as an "unpalatabie necessity." "Before we could start we had a 15 per cent increase in inflation in all costs," he told a meeting of
the borough council this week. "We have got to live with this from the start." The 26 per cent rise in rates will cost ratepayers about an extra 15 to 20
cents in the dollar this year. Mr J. M. Stanley, who has always voted against increases in borough rates, said he would have to vote for them this time. "I think the whole thing
is foolish, but it is no good apologising for the increases this year," he said. "I will vote for the rise because I have to." Mr M. J. Morel said there was no alternative but to face up to increases in the rates of a growing borough. "I think Mr Stanley has put very clearly the reasons fjpr the increase," he said.
