WHARERANGI: BUILDERS URGED TO REGISTER
The Mayor of Taupo, Mr C. S. Currie, has urged builders to register for tendering for the Wharerangi old folks home project. Registration opened today and will close next Tuesday. The search for a builder follows the Government increasing the subsidy for the extensions and alterations to Dover House from $120,000 to $285,000. Said Mr Currie yesterday: "Let us hope and pray we can now get cracking and have this much needed amenity started. "It is too bad that we should have been subjected to the lengthy delays that have taken place for nearly three years. "What is unbelievable is that at no stage has anyone in Wellington come forward with suggestions of a helpful nature, nor , has anyone agreed to meet us on the spot to discuss possibilities. "We have already ruri the full circle of calling tenders, getting prices and quantitative surveys and being told that all sorts of things were wrong with the alterations we submitted. "Surely we have now experienced every negative answer that otir dealings with the Health Department can produce."
Mr Currie said the project committee could now only hope that Taupo builders would respond to the registration call so that positive construction could begin. The old folks home will
provide accommodation for 30. When the increased subsidy was announced in Parliament, the Acting Minister of Health, Mr King, said the need for an elderly people's home was unquestioned.
"The Government is pleased to be able to provide the backing needed for the establishment of a home," he said. "I hope the project will proceed without any further delay."
