HISTORIC SOCIETY MOVE
A meeting to discuss the formation of an historic society is to be held in Turangi tonight. The director of the New Zealand Historic Places 1 rust, Dr J. R, S. Daniels, will be among the guest speakers. Turangi already has a comprehensive small museum attached to the Ministry of Works and Development information centre depicting both the Maori and European history of the area. The purpose of the historic society would be to preserve local artifacts and investigate more thoroughly the district's past. A lot of excavation work has been done round Turangi by the Historic Places Trust. In establishing the Tongariro power development project Government departments took great care to damage as little as possible the historic significance of the land.
