SUBSIDY GRANT, BUT NOTHING EXTRA
A $287,100 National Roads Board subsidy has been granted to the Taupo County Council for road development and improvement — but no supplementary money has been allocated. The council is to supplement the grant with $114,900 bringing the total expenditure for 1974 to $402,000. The county engineer, Mr J. W. Bull, said the council had hoped for something extra. "The basic allocation is never enough — but we have no real reason to be dissatisfied — we just didn't get our bonus," he said. "Maybe next time." However, Mr Bull said the allocation was sufficient for the county to carry out
all the works on its current programme. Major works include earthworks on Rotokawa Road. "There will also be another big earthworks contract on Tirohanga Road," said Mr Bull. Tutukau Road, which is heavily scoured by rain in bad weather, is to have about a mile, of metal laid. A second coat of seal will be laid on Whangamata Road but no work
will be carried out on Poihipi Road. "We will be paying only a contract retention," said Mr Bull. Funds have been put on the programme for crash rails on both sides of the Waitahanui Bridge. The intersectjon of State Highways 1 and 5 will also be upgraded. "We will be continuing in a big way on improving the road between Wairakei and Mihi," said Mr Bull.
