Napier — Taupo Rd criticised

The condition of the Napier-Taupo highway has come in for some criticism from members of the National Roads Board. At its annual estimates meeting in Wellington this week the board decided to direct the No. 5 District Roads Council [Hawke's Bay] to take immediate action to strengthen the highway. * Board members said the road was deteriorating because of logging opera- " tions. The Director of Roading, Mr F. A. Langbein, is reported as saying it was ridiculous that the council was deferring work for two years when action was needed urgently. When considering its annual estimates, the board was told the council * proposed to begin stock-piling metal for strengthening work to be carried out in 1976-77. The board agreed that the council needed to take immediate action to secure the metal and decided to direct the council to make provision for the Work next year.
