NO DROP IN TRADING

Taupo retailers appear to have had no decrease in trading figures or turnover since they decided to close early on Friday nights in a bid to conserve power. A spokesman for the Taupo Retailers' Association said most proprietors were co-operating and closing at 7.30 p.m. or earlier "because people just aren't around." However, he said there were some exceptions but they were few.

"After discussing the position with retailers it appears that the public is shopping early on Fridays or coming into town on Saturday morning," said the spokesman. "We see that there are a lot more notices going up in shops advertising early closing and it appears to be catching on." Early closing on Friday nights will continue until the power crisis ends.
