MORE POWER ALLOWED IN COLD SNAPS

The NZED has authorised the Taupo MED to modify its power restrictions if the weather is bad. The borough electrical engineer, Mr K. G. Stewart, said the department had faced up to the difficulties of temperature sensitive areas and had set down new guidelines for restraint action. "We have approval to restrain power less if the temperature or the weather conditions are bitter and we will follow the guidelines if the present conditions continue," he said. This week Taupo is running 13.6 per cent over its allocation, but Mr Stewart said consumers were not going to be deprived of heat and light when they ' most needed it. If the weather conditions improve restraints may have to be applied. "Thle more power which is saved now will mean less restraints later," said Mr Stewart.
