...but juniors suffer losses
Taupo's four junior representative soccer sides met strong opposition in Rotorua on Sunday and lost three matches and drew one. The teams played sides from Rotorua South in the second round of the Bay of Plenty Sunday junior league. The following is a summary of the games: — Under 10: — ■ This team put up a solid performance and was unlucky to concede a penalty in the first half. Taupo's Graham Gowling scored a good equaliser and the team went close on a couple of occasions to clinching victory. Richard Taling and Grant Treloar had good games in defence and goalie Gavin Clunie also played well. Score: Taupo 1, Rotorua 1. Under 12: — Taupo struggled to contain a good Rotorua side for much of the game, but was not disgraced in defeat. In fact, Taupo played well after half-time but couldn't gain enough good possession to be really dangerous. Steven Brown and Neil Williamson did a lot of good work in defence while Barry Van der Moolen and
Trevor Walters worked hard up front. Score: Taupo 0, Rotorua 7. Under 14: — This side also had trouble containing its opponents. Taupo was three goals down by half-time and althoug'n the side came back with a goal by Kevin Sunnex it was never in the game for long enough to be a serious danger. S. Matthews, C. Fisher and R. King were the pick of a hard-worked Taupo defence while the forwards did not make enough use of the chances created. Score: Taupo 1, Rotorua 5. Under 16: — Taupo scored in the opening minutes of the game and led 3-1 at half-time. However, it allowed Rotorua to take control in the second half and run out easy winners. Goals for Taupo were scored by Kerry Hurren (2) and N. Bernagh. The best players for Taupo were D. Troy and A. Nicholls in defence, while Hurren and Bernagh had good games on the wings. Taupo deserved a better result for its efforts but did tire towards the end of the game. Score: Taupo 3, Rotorua 5.
