Taupo soccer side notches another win

Taupo's senior soccer team continued its winning run on Saturday by beating Kawerau 3-1 in a Bay of Plenty league game.

Kawerau was second on the league ladder before Saturday's match. Taupo will play Kawerau

in the next round of the knock-out cup. Saturday's match was even in the opening stages though at times Kawerau held a slight edge. Two of its players were

fast and attractive and gained a lot of ball for the side. Taupo strove hard to settle into its usual pattern of play and its attacks were often blocked by a strong defence. The Taupo defence was again slow to start buf improved rapidly during the first half. After 35 minutes, Taupo went ahead with a well taken goal. Peter Henry split the Kawerau defence with a pin-point pass which Robert Hindle latched on to and a split second later the net was bulging. This goal helped Taupo lift its game. Kawerau was somewhat stunned when Chris Gilfoyle scored Taupo's second goal with a good left foot shot. This goal came after only another four minutes play and half time came with the score Taupo 2, Kawerau 0. In the early stages of the second half, Kawerau applied a sustained pressure for a spell and, with an accurate shooting forward, could have taken lead. Taupo weathered the attack well and after 65 minutes increased its lead. Gilfoyle broke through the defence again, drew the goalie and scored Taupo's third goal. Taupo was well in control of the game and the Kawerau players who had looked so dangerous early on were now doing the chasing. Late in the game Kawerau scored a consolation goal and the game ended. Taupo 3, Kawerau Town 1. The Taupo team was: R. Simpson, A. Forrest, S. Lochrie, A. Mansfield, I. McCutcheon, K. Hurren, B. Ruck, P. Henry, R. Hindle, C. Gilfoyle, *R. Norman. Substitute, D. Bowles. Scorers for Taupo: C. Gilfoyle 2, R. Hindle. Taupo will complete the first round of the League competition when it plays Rotorua suburbs at Glenholm, Rotorua, next Saturday.
