Relicensing venue now

Memorial Hall

As from yesterday, Taupo people wishing to relicense their motor vehicles have to go to the Memorial Hall instead of the main Post Office. "Space is the main reason why we have gone into separate premises for motor registration this year," said the postmaster, Mr J. F. Farrell. "It will be much more convenient for the public and will relieve pressure on the rest of the Post Office staff." About 7000 vehicles are expected to be relicensed in Taupo this month — 500 more than in June last year.

"Having the use of the public relations officer's former quarters in the Memorial Hall will be ideal for this work," said Mr Farrell. "It is right next to the Post Office and we expect the situation to improve all round. "We will be working entirely on relicensing in the hall until July 6." Although relicensing of motor vehicles has begun, it has been quiet in Taupo

so far, "as is usual this early in the licensing period," he said. "We hope people will not leave things until the last minute. "If they relicense their vehicles as early as possible, it will avoid the inevitable last minute rush and the consequent waiting in queues. "There has been a tendency in recent years to

relicense a bit earlier, and more people are doing it by mail, which is something we are very happy about," Mr Farrell said. "It does make for less pressure in what is a very busy period for the Post Office. And it means less waiting round at counters." The extra 500 vehicles likely to be licensed in Taupo this year was rele-

vant to the growth of the town, he said. Relicensing fees are up a little this year, but the Post Office does not expect this to put people off. Car owners will have to pay $25.20, compared with $21.40 last year, while trailers will be an extra 20c, at $6.80. Motor cycles with a c.c. rating over 60 will cost $16.60 to relicense this year — $2.65 more than last year. Power cycles, on the other hand, are a mere $5.50, an increase of 15c on the 1973 fee.
