Research into lake fishery
The wildlife division of the Department of Internal Affairs in Rotorua is undertaking a research programme on fishery in Lake Waikaremoana and streams flowing into the lake. The department's aim is to obtain more facts to improve its management of the waters. The conservator of wildlife in Rotorua, Mr P. J. Burstall, said that because of the importance in the survey, the department will obtain data on the pressure being applied by fishermen on the trout and the harvest. The anglers are required to fill in a permit which is, in fact, a diary at the same time. Anglers have to note down the part of the lake or river they fished, methods of fishing, total number of hours fishing, and fish kept or
thrown back, and the weight, length, sex and species of the trout. If a marked fish is taken, anglers are required to fill in similar details.
