AIR SEARCH FOR BOAT

An air search of Lake Taupo was made last Thursday afternoon after a distress call was received by Taupo Marine Radio. The Taupo police organised the search after the call for help was received about 12.50 p.m. The craft was in the Western Bays area. An aircraft sent by the police spotted the boat — the 16 ft runabout Oscar 1 a short time later near Waikino Falls

The boat's motor was out of action and the hull was taking in water A strong easterly wind had brought a chop to the lake and the water was rough. Radio directions from the aircraft brought a 34 ft craft, Westland, to the stranded boat in a short time. Oscar 1 was taken in tow by the Westland and she was reported safe at the Kinloch boat harbour shortly after 3.30 p.m.
