Shopping Hours

Some Taupo retailers could render themselves liable for prosecution if they opened their shops for business on the Saturday and Monday mornings of the Christmas and New Year weekends, said a spokesman for the Labour Department in Rotorua. The spokesman said there were a fair number of businesses in Taupo that had the right to open on statutory holidays and they could open on both days; but there were others who had exemptions only for Saturdays. These retailers could not open on any of the days in question as the Saturdays and Mondays were statutory holidays, he said. "They all know what their own permit allows them to do and these permits are supposed to be displayed in their shops," said the spokesman.
