The Automobile Association (Auckland) will open an area office in Taupo 011 November 1. In addition to a full-time area officer, the association will also support a road patrol ofhcer for the Taupo area. This was stated by the general manager for the association, Mr D. L. Perry, in Auckland, on Monday. The Taupo area office will be on the eorner of Tongariro and Horomotangi Streets and it will take over from the agency conducted by Mr F. I>. Stretton thivough his public accountancy practice. The new office will be the eighth to be opened in the association's territory. The others are at Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Matamata, Tauranga and Rotorua. Mr Perry said the appointment of an area officer in Taupo would greatly facilitate the provision of touring inf ormation and other association services to members living in or touring through Taupo and district. He said the appointment, for the first time of a Taupo based road patrol officer would prove particularly valuable at times of emergency when roads in the area were closed because of bad weather conditions. At present the nearest patrol officers are based at Rotorua and Taumarunui. "Iu taking this miove the association is recognising the growth of the Taupo area and its increasing importance as a centre of tourist interest," Mr Perry said. "We are confident that automobile asso c 1 a t i o n members will find this extension of district services invaluable," he concluded.
The Taupo office will have a staff of three comprising an area officer, a typist-clerk and a resident patrol officer.
