Notice Of Motion On Work
Fails To Pass
A move to rescind a recent resolution of the Taupo County Council, to allow the assistant engineer to undertake private work, failed at Tuesday's meeting of the council. In a notice of motion, Cr. ] R. B. Dick said that if the j resolution were allowed to stand, the interests of the county would be placed in jeopardy because, it was likely the consulting engineer for whom the assistant engineer proposed to work, would at some time be engaged by contractors who worked on county tenders; his professional services could then be subject. to two loyalties. Putting his case, Cr Dick said " the county controlled the services of its professional staff 365 days in the year. "It is not that I am worried about the case in point," he said. "It is a question of
precedence that in the extreme could lead to difficulties " The engineer, Mr B. Burton, said he was disappointed the motion had come up in open council meeting. "Having made a decision, the council should abide by it. This can only lead to ! dissention among the staff. "In the original motion, the period for which the work would be done was limited and this could not affect the council," he went on. "The conditions of appointment preclude any work in connection with the Taupo County Council." The notice of motion was seconded, pro forma, by Cr R. D. Tremaine, and was lost on the voices when put to the meeting.
