Twelve hundred square feet of shop frontage is available for business premises at Turangi and ! 98 applicants for shop sites in the tovrn are expected to be called to Wellington for interviews within the next two or three weeks,. More than '90 applicants had been received for sites by Crown Lands Department by the elosing date on May 3. Each business must have ; a minimum of 20 feet front- , age and this wdll allow at the | outside about 50 to 60 shops. 1 After supermarkets> and , large stores have been cater- j ed for, this figure will prob- j able be less.
[ A spokesman for the | Commissioner of Crowm j Lands said applications had j come from businessmen be- | twreen "Wellington and Auckland, although most wrere from central North Island areas, in particular Taupo, Takaanu and Taumarunui. The first applicants from the Taupo-Tokaanu area are expected to be interviewed in Wellington early this wreek, although the spokesman stressed that because businessmen have not been notified at this stage, their application has not neces- ! sarily been declined. Not many of the applicants have been declined at this stage, the spokesman said. The applicants are to be interviewed by a specially appointed committee.
