Letters To The Editor
Sir, — Th-ere are some of us residents of Taupo who remember with a certain amount of regret the Taupo of 30 years ago when the broom formecl golden walls in the headlights of the ear at the sides of th-e narrowr road as we went for a bath at the "AC" of a night. And there were mobs of "wdld" horses which thundered off across the road and through the scrub, though they found owners very quickly when borough and countv started rounding them up. In those "high and far off davs" we did hear rumours of unadvertised pony race meetings held in the main street! But now Taupo has outgrown that sort of thing, having a population probably 10 times what it was then. The roads are being bitumen sealed and the broom has been cleared from the verges which have been graded, provided with good soil and sown down in grass. Most of us are proud of this fresh, tidy town of ours and try to keep our portions of the road verges I tidy and neat. Our thanks
and congratulations are : due to the borough and its | engineers and staff for these ; improvements. But surely Taupo has : passed the stage where the | horses are to be still per- ' mitted to damage the turf ! which we try to look after. I The modern town is no Iplace for this "Wild West" business which goes on
: in some of the streets and : it is up to the borough to | enact and enforce regulaI tions to protect the work it ! does with our money. Let the riders form pony | elubs and do their riding : where they don't damage our pumice roads and the grass outside our homes. — ! Yours, etc..
"MODERN
TAUPO."
