RAT MENACE

Rats that rapidly become "bait shy" are causing trouble at the Tokaanu and Turangi rubbish tips. The health and building inspector for the Taupo County Council, Mr M. A. Miles , told the meeting on Tuesday that poison had been laid for rodents and "caution" signs erected at both tips. "Poisoning however will | not provide any thing but | a check on the population as the rats' birthrate is connected with the amount of food available; there is abundant coverage in the area and the rats become shy of the bait," Mr Miles said,. He added that results were difficult to assess, but the activity appeared to be lessening. Cr Mann suggested the rabbit board be asked to cyanide the area.
