Second Landing On Taupo's
New Airport
A second aircraft landed on the unfinished Taupo airport this week * when an RNZAF Harvard uiade an authorised flight from Ohakea to Taupo to pick up a passenger. According to a spokesman fci the Air Department, the pjtot first landed at Tauhara airfield and, finding his passenger not there, took 0ff and put down on the Wharewaka Point runway. Men and machines were working on the runway at the time and the Harvard did slight damage to the nev/ly-laid second coat seal at the southern end of the strip-
! The passenger, Squadron- | Leader D. Delasen, a flight I safety officer on the staff of i the I nspector of Accidents, ; was taken aboard and the I plane returned to Ohakea. After the pilot had landed, he told the chairman of the airport authority, Mr D. D. Davis, that he had ! had advice from the De- ! partment of Civil Aviation i that the airport was oper- ! ational from April 16. However, the pilot had 1 1 - ; not seen a subsequent ad- | vice stating the airport was | not operational. A sign has now been erected on the southern | end of the runway to in- ! dicate that the airport is not operational.
