NEW SIGNS FOR N.Z. RESERVES

A recent distribution of tree and shrub labels will enable visitors to identify the various species in the more accessible and frequented scenic reserves administrated by Lands and Survey Department. The Director-General of Lands, Mr R. J. MacLachlan said today that the labels, similar to those used in New Zealand national parks and giving the name of the species in Maori, English and botanical form, would be affixed in groups in the vicinity of camping and picnic grounds and popular bush walks. The signs, in red lettering on white background, have been used experimentally in the Riwaka (Nelson) scenic reserve where they have proved popular since their introduction several years ago. "I am sure the general public, and parties of school children in particular, will derive greater benefit and enjoyment from scenic reserve visits with the help of the labels in identifying New Zealand and exotic ttlora," said Mr MacLachlan.
