New Synchroton To Cost £7 Millions

Britain is to have a new particle accelerator to permit the further development of nuclear research at a cost of £7 million. The Prime Minister, Mr. Harold Macmillan, in a written reply in the Commons, said the first task of the National Institute for Research into Nuclear Science has been to examine the proposais for the construction of a new particle accel§rator to permit the further development of nuclear research. The design for this machine, a seven thousand million electron volt proton synchroton, had now been agreed, and work on its | construction had been. put in hand. The machine, which was expected to cost about £7 million, would be built on a site to be made available by the Atomie Energy Authority adjacent to their research establishment at Harwell.
