On Monday night the borough council accepted the tender of Trenehes and Earthworks, Ltd., of Avondale, Auckland, for the hiying of water-mains in Ihe first seetion of reticulation at Taupo. The work will begin within a week. There is a penalty clau.se in i he contract that the job must be iinished by November 30. There were no fewer than 30 tenders. The top quotation was £22,415, and there were 11 tenders below £10,000 each. IN HOUSES, NO METERS Mr Iv. G. Winton, town clerk, tohi tlie Times that the council had decided against the use of meters for ordinary supply, but meters will be installed for extraordinary supplies sucli as commercial or industrial users. A survey among 79 loeal authorities showed that there were 50 with their own water-supplies and the remainder bought water from other local bodies. Auckland City was an example of the last-mentioned. I11 every instance, those with their own water-supplies did not have meters at houses. It is the eoiincil's intention to secure information from all local authorities who charge for water by a rating system, about their methods of cbarging, and the effect upon ratepayers. SERVICE CHARGES "As far as this council is concerned. it will obtain only sufficient mone.r from rates to meet tlie overhead expenses," Mr AVinton said, "and in the fairest manner to all ratepayers concerned." A committee of the council met last night to determine the service charges : the counciTs charge for «'0!m-.-l ing from the main to the coiisumer's lioundary. From tlie boundary to tlie liouse is the coiisumer's own responsibility. It is likely that a circular from the council to all ratepayers will be (listributed during the eoming week.
