INSPECTION BY COUNCIL
The Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, suggested that: the question should he left to tlie works committee to accompany the traffie officer on an mspeetion, and the council agreed to tliat course. Regarding intersections, and the dangers created by tall scrub, heaps of earth, and other materials which in many places obscured vision, Cr Currie said he thought that through publicity, the council might seeure the eo-operation of resiclgnts and ratepayers at many such corners within the borough. There was a lot of scrub inside the fences surrounding a nuniber of properties.
Conceriiing the two trees on the roadway outside the borough offices, tlie mayor said he could not agree with tlie inspector about their removal, but they could be painted or made to show up in tlie dark. Mr Marshall : They are an obstacle, and it is an offence to have them there. They are an obstacle to traffie 011 a public road. Sentimentality is very nice, but I think public safety is far more important. "If you are not prepared to remove these trees, perhaps the council could either erect a fenoe round them or rnilnt Hm trnnbc
tliem, and give tlie public a chance of seeing these obstaeles in their way. "These two trees are a hazard when hacking a vehicle. Thougli we all appreciate trees, I think we should take steps to make the area safer for tlie public." Cr J. M. Stanley: If atiyone is brave eiiougli to decide tliat the trees should be removed — Cr Burge: I have never made any secret of what I think about these trees. I like trees very much, but I think tliat in the interest of road safety, these two trees should be removed; they should be cut down.
Cr Barton said he approved the ereetion of caution signs at approaches to daiigerous intersections; they were simple and effect ive. Concerning parking bays, Mr Marshall said the council had been a trifle liberal with the space allowed. He thought that when the niarks were repainted, tlie spaces could be narrower. It would be advantageous, especially at holiday times. The council decided to have the works committee go carefully and thoroughly into the suggestions made by Mr Marshall, and to report to a
