FIRST ROUND PLAY IN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
Ideal weather at the weekencl produced the best golfing conditions that have prevailed for some weeks at the Taupo Golf Club's course A good round by L. Smith, 87-19-68, in the Flag Match on Saturday enabled him to place the flag near the hole on the 19th green. The only other player to have strokes to spare at the conclusion of the 18 holes was E. Smith, with an excellent 75-4-71. His one shot from the 19th tee was only good enough to take second place. N The first round of Match Play in the Senior Championship saw the defeat of the two top qualifiers, G. Barlow and A. Graham. Barlow went down to H. Fearn 4 and 3 in a match in which both were well below form. Graham and K. Rameka, who have both won the championship on previous occasions, fought a close contest, though again the golf was below standard. Rameka evened the score at the 18th, and went on to take the match at the 19th, the first time he had been the lead. G. Foote and K. Young (1953 champion) turned on some sparkling golf in their encounter. Both were out in 39 against the par 37, but Foote, who had a sflot out of bounds at the 8th, was then 2 up, and maintained this advantage to win 3 and 2. E. Smith, the lowest handicapped player in the field, went round in a steady 80, but found L. Cheal hard to shake off, finally clinching a 2 up victory on the last green. In the semi-finals Fearn plays Smith and Foote plays Rameka. Next Saturday, September 17, players will try conclusions in a Two j Club Match.
