PROPOSED SCHEME FOR WATERING NEW SPORTS GROUND

In connection with the proposal to instal a plant for watering the newlyconstructed Sports Ground during the summer, the Borough Council had before it at its meeting on September 7 a letter from a Hamilton firm with quotations for three types of irrigation outfits. The first was priced at £673, and comprised sprays spaced at 40 feet intervals along a spray line and operating at a pressure of 351bs, giving a spread of approximately 90 feet, requiring 11 sprays . in a distance of 420 feet. This scheme would supply one inch of water in just under three hours. The quotation included 420 feet of three inch aluminium alloy piping, with fittings, joints, etc., a 15 h.p. electric motor and a . two inch pump, with fittings. The other, two outfits quoted comprised the type of irrigation in which pipes are perforated along their entire length to give a constant and even distribution of water the full length of the pipes. This system was istated to give more even coverage than given by revolving sprays. The first of these two outfits, to apply .625 inch of water per hour, with necessary piping and a 10 h.p. electric motor, pump, and fittings. was quoted at £717. The second outfit of this type, apply ing one inch of water per hour, with a 12^ h.p. motor, pump, etc., was quoted at £818. The quotations included delivery and installation on the ground, but not the buried main line from the river to the field.

In discussion on the quotations, Cr J. M. Stanley said he felt that for the area concerned the schemes seemed expensive. If they got more information as to watering an area the size of the Sports Ground it might be possible to obtain a cheaper system. The Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, said the cost was more than anticipatedHe had no doubt, however, that the Sports Ground would be no good without a watering system, with which councillors expressed agreement. Following discussion it was decided to meet representatives of various sports organisations and discuss the matter with them. It was left to Cr Stanley to arrange with sports bodies to have representatives meet the Council on Monday evening, -September 12.

At this later meeting, Messrs G. A. Acres, G. W. Foote, F. D. Stretton and N. Hatton, representing various sports bodies, met the council and a full round-table discussion was held. Councillors and members of the deputation were agreed that an irrigation system was a necessity. It was decided that the Council should obtain further information and quotations, iand that the sports representatives should meet the Council again when this was to hand.
