HORSES ON ROADS
LAW RE IMPGUNDING IS OUT OF DATE
At the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday, June 2, the Town •Clerk, Mr S. Torepe, read a letter received from. the Couneil's solicitors dealing with the legal position regarding the impounding of and dealing with horses and other stock wandering on Borough roads. Mr Torepe also reported that several horses had forced their way through a fence of the Pound the previous night, and had damaged Mrs H. Keen's garden. In a discussion of difflculties encountered in dealing with horses on the roads, Cr. C. J. Vedder said that the> only way to deal with the matter effectively was to have the legislation dealing with wandering stock brought up to date. The Act had not been amended since 1908. The Municipal Association should be asked to bring the matter before the Government. With regard to the pound, they must put up a fence that would keep horses in, something like a stockyard fence. Cr. C. S. Currie agreed that the Council should enforce the by-laws and strengthen the pound fences. Cr. K. E. Young considered the fence could be made strong enough by using rails, for which Oregon pine saplings would be suitable and could be obtained locally. A motion that this be done, moved by Cr. Vedder and seconded by Cr. Currie, was carried.
