WOMEN'S BOWLING CLUB

SUCCESSFUL CLOSING DAY The Taupo Women's Bowling Club ended its first season with a happy closing afternoon's play on Thursday of last week. There was a good attendance, and among those present were Mrs J. Story, patroness of the club, and Mr Story, chairman of the Town Board. In conversation with a Times representative Mrs R. McMillan, president, said that though the club had not been formed in tihie to have a full season it had had a most successful one. Members had been enthusiastic and it seemed that the club was filling a real want, and the appeal made by the game was shown by the fact that members' ages ranged from sixteen to perhaps sixty-five. The club rooms had been gaily decorated with flowers by Mrs W. Anderson and Mrs Bert Harnett, who also made charming bouquets which were presented to Mrs Story, patroness, Mrs R. McMillan, president, and the vice-presidents, Mrs C. McLean and Mrs Grey, and dainty sprays presented to Mrs Stanley, secretary, Mrs S. Pearce, treasurer, and Mrs Peacocke, who had arranged the games for the afternoon's rinks competition. This competition resulted in a win for the following team: Mr C. McLean, skip, Mrs Lough, Mrs Calkin, Mr J. Wells. Presentation of Trophies During the afternoon trophies won during the season were presented by the president, Mrs McMillan, as folllows: The E. T. Smith, Buttons, prei sented by Mr "Tim" Smith for rinks, won by Mrs Harlan, Mrs N. East, Mrs B. Harnett, Miss Manning. The Peacocke Cup and Bars, presented by Mr H. J. Peacocke for Championsliip Pairs, won by Mrs Peacocke and Mrs H. Gradwell. Crystal Jug, presented by Mrs C. McLean for the most improved player, presented to Mrs Lough.

A silver cup, presented by Mr Armstrong, for Championship Singles competition, is to be competed for the first time. A very popular presentation was that of a woollen scarf each to Messrs Pennycook and J. H. Marlow, made by the president on behalf of the club, in recognition of the great help they had given the Women's Club. The president also referred to the way in which the executive and members of the Men's Club had assisted and encouraged in the formation and carrying on of the Women's Club, which was greatly appreciated. A feature of the afternoon was the excellent afternoon tea provided by the joint efforts of the members. A welcome gift to the club was a pretty hand-erocheted bag from Mrs Walters (Avondale Women's Bowling Club), the competition for which was won by Garry Rowlands.
