LIGHT ON THE SUBJECT

Considerable sp^ice is devoted in this issue to Taupo's Hydro-elec-tricity scheme. This enlarged edi~ tion *of the Times would have been issued as inteded to co-incide with Ithe official ceremony of switching on the light on December 23rd, had it been possible to ascertain with certainty that the event would take place on that paificular date, and airrangements for publication made J accord ingly. As every-one knows the actual event came as a surprise. Following on that came the> shutdown of the printing office for the Christinas holidays, during which there was a week of Camival that made the maximum demand on the space available in the following edition of the Times. This expl&na-

tion, we feel, is due to our readers, We take this opportunity of congratulating the (hairman and members of the Town Board on the achievement of which the switch'ngon ceremony in Rickit's Hall on December 23rd marked a pleasing clL max. Especially do we congratulate the Engmeer-m-Charge, Mr XVlandeno, the eontractors', and the works staif, on having ' accomplished what they did under an aggravating persistent spell of adverse weather. They did ' a great job. Muc(h rema'ns to be done before the major plant is in« stalled at the head works at Hatepe, and the reticulation of the town and district is eompleted, but the baek of the job has been broken, and it shouid not be l°ng befo e the community is in full enjoyment of thc benefits of its own hydro-electricity sfheme. It is a milestone in the progi^ess of Taupo. [Among the tnbutes due to those actively coneerned in the final stages of the work before the cuirrent could be sWitched on is one that wrs cbscured in a printer's error in our report of the ceremony — namely, the public acknowledgement made of Mrs Story?s (Not Mr) unremitting zeal and attention for the comx rt of the works staff who toiled :n the rain to get the job done in time.] / te- , , n ril-MM— MU III 1111 ■IWII1 HUI
