FIRST ANNIVERSARY
^/ITH this issue the Taupo Times completes the first year of its existence. It was established as a weekly journal devoted primarily to the interests of its community — the Taupo Gountiry. The promoters of the enterprise had faith in the progress and future of Taupo. They wero confident that the community would co-operate with the establishment of publicity that would providc a forum for the expression of opinions, a channel for a record of the activities of a community that till that time had been subsisting on rumour and gassip. Their •faith and eonfidence have been justified by the reception accorded the new jouirnal, and the suppcrt extended to it by readers and advertisers during the first critical year of its existence. For this manifestation of gocdwill we of the Taupo Times are deeply grateful. It is an encouragement to go on, to expand, in step with the growth of the community to whose service the paper has been dedicated. ProgrCss is a continuing adventuire. Stagnation and decay are the fate of those who come to a standstill, content to rest on their laurels. We who are responsible for the production of the Taupo Times have had to wrestle with problems thht were as nuts to foe craeked, with difficulties that were as obstacles to be sunnounted. With our print'ng establishment 70 odd rniles distant at Cambridge, correspcndents scattered over a wide area, methods of transport and means of communication subject to miscarriage or disconnection, it has nevertheless been possible to deliver the Times to its : clientelc week by week without ser- 1 ious intenuption. For this we have ' to thank our printers ("The Wrai- ( kato Indcpendent")? the bus dirivers who have carried their despatches with surprisingly few mishaps, the ( co-operation of contributors and correspondents who have supplied reports and news items, and various services responsible for the delivery of the paper to its readers. All these favouring factors have combined to enable the foundations | of the new enterprise to be encourag- j ingly eonsolidated, and to make it j possible for the management to c6nsider ways and means of expanding the contents of the Times, and extending its usefulness, with some degree of assurance and conhdence in the future. It is a responsibility wc owe to the community, and one that will be discharged to the best of our ability. Once again, we thank the people of the Taupo Country for their sUpport and eneomragement, and assure them of our continuing devotion to the service of their interest and weliare.
