GUY FAWKES' NIGHT

Bonfire and Rockets In view of the recent unsettled weather conditions, Taupo youngsters and adults were lucky to have had a fine night for the bonfire and rockets * which illuminated the Domain on Wednesday of last week in commemoration of the frustrated attempt of one, Guy Fawkes, and others to blow up the British House of Commons and all ministers and honourable members present. This historic episode was hundreds of years ago, but the eimmemorative observance has survived with surprising vitality largely due to the opportunity given to the young people to set off crackers, fire rockets, ,and light bonfires for the purpose of consuming the effigies of firiend Guido. Nowadays is is customary to have effigies of well-known citizens consigned to the fiames. The principal one in the Taupo celebration was for some unknown reason the organiser of the Wai* Memorial Hall Campaign, Colonel J. D. Swan,- Fresident of the R.S.A., who himself took the affair as a huge joke. There were lots of other guys of course, and a competition had been organised for - the best effort. First pirize went to an effigy made by Patricia Thomas and Gaynor Percival; second to Murray Lough's guy. All had a great night, and as a result the sum of £23/3/- was added to 'the Wai" Memorial Hall Fiinds.
