TOKAANU

VOLUNTEER BRIGADE The monthly meeting of the Tokaanu Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in Ford's store, Tokaani . on Tuesday evening, August 5th. The Superintendent, Mr Bruce Sutherland, was in the chair and the following were present: — Rev. Father Aarts, Messrs P. J. Dempsey, H. B. Proctor, M. Campbell, A. Withington, F. Hill and , V. J. Ford (Secretary). An apology for absence through illness was received from Mr Harold Gee, and leave of | absence was granted to Mr Bruce j Edkins who is undergoing military ! training. ■ The resignation of Mr Keith Proctor who is leaving the district was received with regret. A circular was received from U.E. B.A. concerning^ the Conference and Competitions at Hastings in February of 1953, and after a brief discussion it appeared unlikely that Tokaanu would be represented owing to the impractibility of firemen getting away at this time of the year. The matter of raising finance was then discussed and it was finally resolved that the Urban Fire Authority be communicated with to negotiate with the Tuwharetoa Trust Board to deal with the collection of donations from the Mafcri residents and to also approach the Tokaanu Domain Board for monetary assistance. The Brigade to collect from the European residents of the district.

The Foreman, Mr Frank Hill, reported that all equipment was in good working order. Insurance on the Fire Station of £250 has been arranged by the Urban Authority. Although certain areas had been cleared of ^erub at Turangi, there still remained stumps and as these fire breaks v^ere essential to easy access to water it was not practicable to negotiate them whilst the stumps remained and accordingly it was resolved that the Urban Fire Authority be communicated with to ascertain whom responsibiiity rests upon for the completion of clearing of tbe areas mentioned. The next practise to be held on Sunday, August 17th., firemen to assemble at station at 10 a.m.. .. The meeting then concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to the chair.
