STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX
NEW "CHEV'S" ARRIVAL IN TAUPO What must have been the first motor car to have been delivered in Taupo straight from the factory, and still in its case as it left its American factory, was unpacked by Mr 0. Gillies last Saturday morning. Mr Gillies and; Mr Ogden travelled to Auckland early on Friday morning with a forward loading of wood (for the Blind Institute), and returned with his 1952 model De Luxe Ohevrolet, which had been ordered for forwarding to New Zealand by Mr and Mrs Don Brandle shortly before their recent visit to this country, Although the car has been in this country since July 14th., it was not unloaded until 10 days later, and it- was the last day of the month before Mr Gillies was notified by the Customs that it should be lifted by 2 o'clock on Friiay afternoon. Although he left Taupo at 3 a.m. on Friday it was lunch time before the preliminaries were completed, and extra money had to be paid for the few minutes work required to load the car on to a truck during the Cargo Workers lunch hour.
When the sides of the case were owered in Taupo on Saturday morning, the new' car was revealed as a "leek model in light beige, well suited to the dusty roads of the district. ihe model attains 30 horse power, ind in theory is capable of 100 miles per hour, although that speed is^ unlikely to be reached on the public highway.
