HATEPE LETTER

On iMonday last a slip came down at Te Toki Point, south of Hatepe. A railway >bus had just passed the point, and a small car, following, received some of the slip on its bonnet. With the aid of a grader, the road wlas clear for traffic in an hour, During that period approximately 40 cars were held up on the northern side of the slip. During Anzac week-end Mr R. Morehu and a relative, while on a hunting trip into the Kaimanawai Range, came across some Japenese deer. These deer are smaller than the better , known specimens, and have an attractive spotted skin. They are presumed to have been released in the- Kaimanawais in 1920. The fishing in the Hatepe Stream, was disappointing during the closing weeks of the season, when anglers visited the adjacent rivers. Various reasons were given for the scarcity of fish, a plausible one being, work on the Hydro scheme and a discolouration of water. However. with a lengthy period of rain, and the river running in semi-flood this season may be a debatable one. During the month many houseowners paid a visit to Hatepe, noteably during the school holidays. Among these were: — Dr and Mrs North and family; Mr and Mrs Ladd and family; Mr and 'Mrs Gooding and family; Mrs Dean (Palmerston North) ; Mrs Gibbons (Wanganui) was the guest of Mrs Dean. Mr and Mrs Tong of Levin and their son, Tony, on holiday from the Timaru High iSchool with ia school chum, whose home is in Fiji; Mark and Jerone Irvin, on their way to Gisborne, from Wanganui Collegiate, and friends; Mr Irwin and party; Mr and Mrs D. Allen, Auckland; Mr and Mrs T. Wyall, of Paekakariki; Mr Mansell, Wellington; Mr Ken Sherlariki,P.N and family; Mr and Mrs G. Sherlariki; Mr and Mrs A. Rowe and family spent a holiday with Mr and Mrs W. Perry, parents of Mrs Rowe. — Correspondent.
