OFF TO KOREA
Send-Off To G«nner F. Reid Gunner Franklyn Reid left N.Z. in a party of twenty soldiers bound for Korea, on board the TEAL Solent Flying Boat "Awatere," on May 16th. Amongst the relatives who gathered at Mechanies' Bay to say farewell were: Mrs G. W. P. Reid, Mrs G Brassey, Mr and Mrs G. R. Reid, Mr and Mrs H. J. Reid and wee Lyndsay, Miss Mufty Rameka, Mr and Mrs E. Bone and Keren and Robbie Reid. The weather that day was everything one could wish for, and the Awatere" made a very impressive sight as it took off. In a letter from Darwin Gunner Reid described a wonderful trip, with a two-day visit to Sydney, where ha called on his grandaunt, Mrs McFarlane, sister of Mr George Reid, senlor. Also sightseeing trips about the beaches. From Sydney to Darwin the boyj. travelled in a big British Commonweaith plane at 10,500 feet and 309 miles per hour. The heat in Darwin was very trying, but the stay there was short, as the journey to Manilla was to be made at 11.30 that night. Gunner Reid expressed his appreciation of receiving three cablegrams at Sydney containing messages of good luck from his aunts, Mrs T Gillies, Mrs O. Storey and Miss e! Rickit.
