A Merlin, A Mamba and An Adder!
One of Britain's flying test-beds — an aircraft used to test new engines in the air — has been fitted with six engines of three different types. It has a turboprop in the nose, two pis-ton-engines on either wing and a pure jet in ithe tail. It is at present making* test flights from an Arm strong Siddeley airfield near Coventry. The aeroplane was originally a Lancaster powered by four Merlin piston engines. It was then fitted for tests with a turboprop Mamba in the nose. Finally, a small straighfc jet Adder — Britain's smallest jet engine — was put in the taiL The latest engine in this flying bybrid, the Adder, is being built for some of the pilotless planes being used on the Woomers Range in Aus« tralia. It is also fitted in Sweden's prototype delta aircraft, and there are plans for using 't m new, still secret, projects.
