MARKED TROUT

In our first issue we published an article summarising the steps taken by the Department of Internal Affairs to examine "the conditional development and also to some extent the movement of fish in the Lake and surrounding waters. This work is being done for the benefit of anglers, because the information received when marked fish are caught and presented at one of the official weighing stations collectively will be of great value to the fishing fraternity in years to come. Unfortunately, out of the hundreds of fish caught this season information has been received through official sources of only 93 marked fish having been caught, but the authorities are sure that anglers have caught more than that number. They feel that many anglers are ignorant of what is required, or else they consider that their summer holiday should not be 'spoilt' by making records on official forms. However that may be but we cannot over-emphasise the importance of anglers watching out for the tag attached in the case of Lake Taupo trout to the dorsal fin of the fish, and on reporting details and presenting the fish for weighing at one of the official recording stations mentioned below. These stations are performing a valuable service to the fishermen of Taupo, but the co-operation of the rank and file fisherman. It is up to him to watch for these marks and to assist the authorities to the fullest possible extent. Anglers will notice from the following list that the recording stations, where official recording facilities are available are widespread, and should provide adequate opportunity for them to report all such catches. The list is as follows: — Members of the Taupo Hire Launchmen's Association, who have all facilities on their launches.

Mr A. G. Hall, Pihanga St., Taupo; Mr I. Logan, Waitahanui Lodge; Mr A. Lawrence, Lawrence's Lodge, Waitahanui; Mr M. Krivan, Hatepe; Mr W. A. Spragg, Waitetoko; Mr G. J. Flight, TaurangaTaupo; Mr W. Sutherland, Motuopa; Bridge Lodge, Turangi; Taylors Fishing Lodge; Turangi; Government Hatchery, Turangi; Mr B. Nicholas, Turangi; Lake Taupo and District Anglers' Assn. Clubhouse at Turangi.
