ANOTHER NEAR DROWNING
TAUPO WHARF UNSAFE BATHING PLACE — Baturday, February 9. Two boys narrowly escaped drowning yesterday afternoon at the Wharf. Malcolm Wallace, son of Mr A. A. Wallace, attempted to swim from the Rowboat Jetty to the Wharf and got into difficulties. Galfred Livesey, aged ten, son of Captain Livesey, jumped from the Jetty and swam to Wallace and held him up. Both boys were then caught by the upstream eddy and swept under a launch lying at the downstream side of the Wharf. Mr James Riddle of Te Puke who was washing his car nearby rushed into the water dived and brought both boys to the surface, and all were assisted from the water by spectators on the Wharf. Mr Riddle and Mrs V. Geoghan gave attention to the boys, and Mr Geoghan took Malcolm Wallace, who was somewhat shaken, to his home. The bravery and presence of mind of young Galfred Livesey has been highly praised by witnesses who saw the incident, as was Mr Riddle^ prompt and efficient action. The incident emphasises the risks of swimming in this locality where tricky currents are a constant danger.
