FISHING NOTES
Messrs I. Stephenson, of Gisborne, Sam Scott, of Newmarket, and Jack Wells, of Taupo, returned on January 30 from ten ckiys spent at Whanganui, Western Bay. They report that the fishing was muclf poorer than previously this season.. Catches were smaller, and the condit ion of fish taken was of a lower standard. A road down to the beach is being constructed, and some cars have already been able to use it. On a recent evening there were seventeen rods fishing in the vicinity of the stream mouth. Turangi. January 30. Fishing in the river and delta are improving slightly. The lake will have to warm a good deal before a run in the rivers can be expected, and this is unlikely to take place before the end of February or even early March. A few 7 to 711b. trout have already been taken in the river. Smelt fishing in the south-western portion of the lake has been very goodj Amongst those who have been successful in obtaining limit bags recently were Mr Justice Tyndall, Mr A. R. Cutler V.C.. Australian High Commissioner, who in his short stay included a 7|lb. rainbow in his limit at Kuratau, Mr A. D. Park late secretary to the Treasury and Mr J. M. Durward. y Tokaanu. Two exceptional catches were made last week, when Mr Jock McNab of Wellington took a 121b. trout at the Delta and about the same time Mr Simpson landed a 1111b. brown trout in a creek at Waihi. A shows :that fishing all round (Ihereport from Mr Proctor at Waihi Kuratau district has been good. Motuopa. An 81b. brown trout was caught during- the week in Motuopa Bay. Te Rangiita. In the past week the river has been very low and the lake has warmed with the result that fishing at the mouth of the Tauranga-Taupo river has been very poor. It would appear that the warmer weather last week produced a tendency for fish to move towards the colder waters of the Delta region. I-ndications suggest that a run in the river cannot be expected for at least six weeks. In the past four days Mr L. Barton and his son have been doing very well at Stump Bay, taking two limit catches. Waitahanui. * A report states that fishing has been very poor hsre this year and this has been particularly noticeable after the bumper season experienced last year. Mr F. L. Rountree of Hamilton took an 8|lb. fish in the Groin Pool in the river last. Saturday.
